November 13th 2009 - Dinner and Movie Night in Honor of Veteran's Day

Friday, Nov,13th, the Parish of St. Paul's sponsored an event to honor our military veterans.
The program consisted of a free dinner for all that attended.   The dinner included Chicken, Salmon, Vegetables, Potatoes, Bread, Dessert and Refreshments.

When the dinner was concluded, the folks were asked to adjourn to the Church proper, where a 'dramatic reading' of a letter by Lt. Col. George Goodson, was read.  This letter, of real life situations,  chronicled the time he spent as a 'casualty notification officer', during the present conflict in  Iraq and Afghanistan.  The 'casualty notification officer' has the unpleasant duty of notifying family members about the status of their loved ones, in combat.  Most of the time it is 'bad news'.  It was a moving account of the human toll on not only the Soldiers, their Officers, and the Notification Team, but also about the resultant trauma to the families at home.  The letter took about 20 minutes to read, and it was somber stuff.

All of this  was then followed by a screening of the most excellent HBO movie, 'Taking Chance', starring Kevin Bacon.  This was also based on a true and real life story about  Marine Lt. Col. Michael Strobl volunteering to escort Soldier Chance Phelps, deceased,  back from Iraq.  The point of the program was to show folks 'the consequences of having someone else step in front of a bullet for you.'  The feedback indicates that this program was a success, with many of the Parish very moved by the evenings events.  Many thanks to the Parish of St. Paul's, it's Vestry and to Father John Burton for encouraging this program to be scheduled.
